The Indie Book Diagnosis
Before you spend another dollar on marketing, find out what's actually holding your book back. Most indie authors who struggle with sales aren't failing because their book is bad. They're failing because something in the foundation is broken — and they don't know what it is. Is it the cover? The blurb? The categories? The keywords? The lack of reviews? A platform that isn't building toward anything? A launch that happened without a plan?
The Indie Book Diagnosis finds out. It's a personalised, written audit of everything that affects whether your book gets discovered, trusted, and bought — delivered as a clear, prioritised action plan within five business days.
What's included
Your Amazon page assessment: A forensic look at your cover (does it signal your genre to the right readers?), your book description (is it selling or just summarising?), your categories (are you competing in the right ones?), and your keywords (are you findable by readers who don't know your name?).
Your author platform review: An honest assessment of your Substack or newsletter, your author website, and your broader online presence. Are you building a direct reader relationship, or are you entirely dependent on Amazon's algorithm?
Your marketing activity assessment: What you've done so far, what's working, what isn't, and what's missing. No judgement — just clarity. A prioritised action plan Not a list of everything you could do. A sequenced plan for what to fix first, second, and third — based on where your biggest leverage is right now.
Who this is for
Indie authors whose book launched but didn't gain the traction they hoped for
Authors preparing to relaunch a book that underperformed first time around
Authors about to spend money on advertising who want to make sure their foundations are solid before they do
Authors who've been told to "just market more" but don't know where to start
Authors who suspect something is broken but can't identify what
Who this is not for
Authors looking for a quick fix or a guaranteed sales boost. The Diagnosis gives you clarity and a roadmap — acting on it is up to you. If you want someone to execute the plan with you, we offer higher-touch services that build on the Diagnosis findings.
Why diagnosis before strategy?
The indie author market is full of generic advice. Run Amazon ads. Build a Substack. Get on BookTok. Post on Instagram. Most of it is well-intentioned and most of it is useless if the foundations aren't right.
Spending money on advertising before your Amazon page converts is like running water into a leaking bucket. Building a Substack before you know who your reader is means growing the wrong audience. Chasing reviews before your cover signals the right genre means attracting readers who won't finish the book.
The Diagnosis tells you which foundations are solid and which are leaking — so every dollar and hour you invest after that is working with the grain, not against it.
What authors say
“Someone recently asked me the hardest part of being an indie author. I told him it was dealing with all the scammers and hucksters disguised as "marketers" or "promoters". I was about ready to throw in the towel until I came across Fleur Hull. So far this has been the best month since I started publishing there in 2022.” - Saddletramp1956, Amazon Category Bestseller
“I learned the fundamental essence of Amazon Bestseller status and especially how the categorisation system works properly, by working with Fleur Hull for my bestselling book, Happy Habits.” - Gunnar Habitz, Triple Bestselling Author
"I now have a clear, actionable roadmap to follow — I feel like I finally know what I'm doing." — Donna Blevins, author
How it works
Step 1 — Purchase the Diagnosis below. You'll receive a short intake form asking for your book details, your Amazon link, your current platform links, and a brief summary of your marketing activity to date.
Step 2 — We review everything. Within two business days of receiving your completed intake form, we begin your audit. We look at your book through the eyes of a reader finding it for the first time, and through the eyes of a marketer assessing what's working.
Step 3 — You receive your written report. Within five business days, you receive a detailed written report covering all four areas above, plus your prioritised action plan. You can implement it yourself or book a follow-up session to work through it together.

Currently limited to accepting 6 diagnosis orders per month.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to have a finished book? Yes — this service is for authors whose book is already published on Amazon. If you're still writing or preparing to publish, our Author Coaching and Book Marketing Plan services may be a better fit.
What if my book isn't on Amazon? The platform assessment and author platform review still apply, but the Amazon-specific elements won't. Get in touch before purchasing and we'll advise whether the Diagnosis is the right service for your situation.
Is this the same as a manuscript assessment? No. The Diagnosis looks at your book's market positioning and discoverability — not the writing itself. If you need a manuscript assessment, see The Author Checkup.
What happens after the Diagnosis? Many authors use the report to implement changes themselves. Others book a follow-up coaching session to work through the action plan together, or proceed directly to one of our execution services — such as a new book description, an Amazon category strategy, or a full book marketing plan.
Can I get a refund? Given the bespoke nature of this service, we don't offer refunds once the audit has commenced. If you have questions before purchasing, please book a free chat.
