Media Release: Stacks Publishing Starts Work with Latimer Redlance on His Memoir ‘Gutter to the Stars’
Stacks Publishing has today announced it will publish Gutter to the Stars: Memories of a Post-Grunge Drifter by Latimer Redlance, a raw, immersive Gen-X memoir set for global release on 5 December 2025.
Tracing decades of life on society’s margins, Gutter to the Stars offers an unflinching portrait of resilience, counterculture, and the restless pursuit of belonging. Spanning continents and subcultures, Redlance’s journey moves from the frozen Gulf Islands of Canada to a brutal New Zealand boarding school, from the feral bush raves of 1990s Aotearoa to the gritty backstreets of Sydney and Queen Street, Toronto.
Along the way, Redlance crosses paths with Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman and a young Ryan Gosling: encounters that reveal a generation shaped as much by disillusionment as by creative defiance.
“Survival isn’t always graceful,” says Redlance. “Sometimes the best stories come from the worst nights, and from the people who never stop showing up.”
Positioned within Biographies & Memoirs → Music → Punk, Gutter to the Stars stands out for its sociological depth, capturing the working-class artists, wanderers, and outsiders who built fragile communities amid the upheavals of late-20th-century youth culture. Early reviewers have described it as “an unvarnished time capsule of the Gen-X underground.”
The book’s release aligns with a renewed cultural fascination with the 1990s alternative scene and a broader revival of independent music memoirs. Redlance’s work distinguishes itself through its humanity and refusal to sensationalise hardship.
“It’s about the humanity that persists even when everything else falls away,” Redlance explains. “The music, the mistakes, the loyalty: they all become part of the same survival song.”
Gutter to the Stars has already attracted early attention from reviewers across North America and Oceania for its visceral prose and atmospheric sense of place. Its pages move fluidly between isolation and connection, weaving a story that feels both intensely personal and universally resonant.
